Concrete Steps & Stairs
Build safe, durable steps that provide reliable access for years with minimal maintenance required.

Safety and Function Combined
Steps and stairs are some of the most important features on your property. They provide access between different levels and must be safe, sturdy, and dependable every single day. Poorly built or damaged steps are safety hazards that can lead to serious injuries. When you need new steps or your existing ones need replacement, concrete offers the best combination of safety, durability, and low maintenance.
Concrete steps do not rot like wood, do not rust like metal, and handle Florida weather without deteriorating. They stay solid and secure year after year with very little upkeep. Whether you need front entrance steps, stairs to a second story, access to a basement, or steps in your garden, concrete provides a permanent solution. When built by experienced contractors, your concrete steps will serve you well for decades.
Here in Bradenton, we build steps that account for our climate and soil conditions. Proper foundation and drainage are critical so steps stay level and do not shift over time. We also pay close attention to dimensions and finish to ensure your steps are comfortable to use and safe in all weather conditions, including when wet.
Building Code-Compliant Steps
Steps and stairs must meet specific building codes for safety. These codes specify dimensions, railings, and other features based on where the steps are located and how they will be used. We are familiar with local building codes and design steps that pass inspection the first time.
Critical Step Dimensions
- Riser height: The vertical distance between steps, typically between seven and eight inches. Consistent riser height is critical for safety. Variations cause tripping.
- Tread depth: The horizontal surface you step on, usually at least 10 inches deep. Adequate tread depth provides secure footing.
- Width: Minimum 36 inches for most residential applications. Wider steps feel more comfortable and accommodate two people passing.
- Nosing: The front edge of the tread that overhangs the riser. Proper nosing improves foot clearance and safety.
- Slope: Treads should slope slightly forward for water drainage, but not so much that they feel uneven when walking.
- Landings: Level areas at the top and bottom of stairs provide safe transitions. Codes specify minimum landing sizes.
These dimensions are not arbitrary. They are based on how people naturally move and what feels safe and comfortable. We calculate dimensions carefully for each project because even small errors make steps feel awkward or unsafe to use.
Handrails are required when you have more than three risers. We can install concrete steps with embedded anchors for metal railings, or build integrated concrete walls that serve as railings. The choice depends on your needs, preferences, and what building codes require for your specific situation.
Design Options and Features
Concrete steps do not have to be plain and utilitarian. You have many options to create steps that look great and complement your property while providing safe, reliable access.
Surface Finishes
Smooth trowel finish looks clean and modern but can be slippery when wet. Broom finish adds texture for better traction and is a popular choice for outdoor steps. Exposed aggregate creates a textured, decorative surface with natural stone appearance and excellent slip resistance. You can also use stamped patterns to create the look of stone or tile. Color and Style
Colored concrete, stains, or dyes let you customize the appearance of your steps. You can match your home exterior, coordinate with other hardscaping, or create contrast for visual interest. Integrated colors go throughout the concrete and will not wear off over time.
Integrated Elements
We can build planters, walls, or seating areas as part of your step structure. Lighting can be incorporated for safety and ambiance. Steps can curve, branch, or include landings at intermediate levels. If you are combining steps with other concrete work like walkways or patios, we design everything to work together as a cohesive system.
During your consultation, we discuss your needs and show you examples of different options. We help you balance function, safety, aesthetics, and budget to create steps that work perfectly for your property.
